The Imagination of Jazz and Jews

We will explore literary associations between jazz and Jews in essays, fiction, film, and sound. Jazz is often hailed as transcendent music: thus we begin by questioning this idea of an aesthetic form for social and cultural emancipation. Our focus stays in Harlem and New Orleans from 1930 to 1980, amongst African Americans and American Jews. We will work back in time with depictions of jazz and Jews by African Americans and then forward with pieces by American Jews. Creators include Theodor Adorno, Louis Armstrong, James Baldwin, George Gershwin, Stefan Weintraub, Max Fleischer, and Spike Lee, plus tunes inspired by Pannonica de Koenigswarter, née Rothschild. Attention will be given to German comparisons. All English levels are welcome.

Michele Chinitz studied Literature, Philosophy, and Film Theory at Oxford University in the UK and Williams College in the US. The Jewish Federation of North America sponsored her to research Jewish methods of learning in Jerusalem in 2007. Her writing on psychoanalysis
and literature received numerous university awards in 2010.
